The Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery awards two research fellowships a year. These are the Lord Nuffield Scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery and the Girdlestone Memorial Scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery. Other research fellowships are available funded by the Royal College of Surgeons, the Botnar Foundation and the Arthritis Research Campaign, and the Medical Research Council on an ad hoc basis.

Clinical Fellowship   » Read Research Fellowship

The Shoulder and Elbow clinic at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre awards a clinical fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery every 12 months. the fellowship usually begins on the 1st of July. The weekly programme of the Fellow involves two and a half days of operating, one day of clinics, half a day of pre-assessment clinic and teaching and one day for personal research and study. At present there is no general on-call commitment attached to the fellowship.

The fellowship offers a wide range of elective shoulder and elbow clinic and operating experience. There is opportunity to learn arthroscopic and open techniques of shoulder and elbow surgical problems. The unit has an active research programme and organises regular teaching and conferences. Funding is available for the Fellow to attend national and international shoulder and elbow meetings and opportunities exist for clinical projects during the tenure of the fellowship.
